I met an internet friend and didn’t die

Last friday Cheyanne came to visit me. Now this doesn’t seem like exciting news, but it is! You see, Cheyanne is from Michigan. And as most of you should know I live in Arizona. Michigan and Arizona are not neighboring states (if you didn’t know that). So, how does one get to know someone who lives in Michigan? The internet of course! :D That’s right, Cheyanne is (was) an internet friend that I got to know through Twitter.
So I don’t really know where to start but basically Cheyanne texted me a few weeks ago and said she was coming to Arizona for spring break because she wanted to meet me (and see Austin) and I was like, “NO WAY!” and she was like, “WAY!” but before she could come out she had to double-check and see if it was okay with her mother and since I’ve skyped with her family n’stuff her mom thought it was cool so Cheyanne spent half of her life savings just to come meet me and we went to the zoo and Mill Avenue in Tempe and because Cheyanne had never eaten at Chick-Fil-A before we took her there and then we went to an improve comedy club that night. It was an AWESOME day and I can’t believe Cheyanne had to go home saturday morning. It’s like she BELONGED in Arizona.

(sorry about the run-on sentence.)

Here are a few photos of Cheyanne and one from the zoo.

I took a bunch of photos of the zoo animals but I only liked this one of the parrot.

Cheyanne at her first Chick-Fil-A! Guess what? She liked it! :D

So yeah, I meet an internet friend and I didn’t get murdered, raped, or molested.

a post about things

Has it been a month already? Good heavens! So how has everyone in the blogging world been? Good? Bad? I’ve been pretty dandy. Busy of course. Lots of things going on such as, college, moezart…oh wait, that’s it. Oh well, it seems like a lot more than just those two things! For college Im studying College Composition (basically CLEP’s version of English 101) and at PVCC I’m taking CPD 150. It’s a college success class. Oh, have I not told you that I am attending community college now? Yeah! Collegeplus isn’t working out for me so I decided to try community college. I like it a lot better!
You know how I graduated from Moezart about this time last year? And how I cried my eyes out because I was so sad it was over? Well….I am in the middle schooler’s play, HONK! The Musical! It’s super fantastical and I’m having so much fun!
Anyway, I’m trying to get into the habit of blogging once a week. About three weeks ago I told myself I should do this. As you can see, I haven’t kept my promise. :P
So this post is basically just a compilation of random photos from the past couple months.
A lot of these photos were taken with my iPhone 4S. It has slowly become my new favorite camera. I find myself reaching for it instead of my DSLR. I love the instant share-abilty and compactness of it. It fits in my pocket and goes everywhere with me. It’s definitely not replacing my DSLR for “professional” work, but for just a carrying-around camera, it’s fantastic!

(Taken with the Canon) This is what we woke up to one morning at our new cabin in Pinetop. By the end of the day, a lot of the snow had melted. (It is also my current blog header.)

Just went for a walk around the neighborhood. (Taken with my iPhone, edited in Photoshop)

Ive started running A/V at our church. I thought the light was so purty that morning. :) (Taken with iPhone, edited in Instagram)

So I got a Macro/Wide-Angle lens for my iPhone. The macro lens is CRAZY close and CRAZY good. haha (Taken with iPhone, edited with Instagram)

Met up with Christian down in Tempe for a little photography adventure. Christian uses a Nikon so I threw him behind bars. ;) (Taken with the Canon)

A tower in Tempe.

These are some of the middle schoolers I get to hang out with every Tuesday. Andrew (L) and Brett (R). I have adopted them as my children because they are awesome! (Taken with iPhone)

I’ll do another post talkin’ about how amazing the iPhone 4S’s camera is. It’s crazy good.

Have a good day!

I Shot My Best Friend and I Liked It

Helllloooo there! Long time, me no post. You good? Nice to hear. So this past month has been yet another hectic one. We celebrated Christmas up in our new cabin. A new year randomly appeared without notice or invitation. For some reason, I turned nineteen (!). I enrolled at PVCC (Paradise Valley Community College) and am taking a class there. Im still doing CollegePlus!. And amongst all this busy-ness, I shot my best friend. Not with a gun you fool! A Canon! ;)

During winter break Daniel wanted me to take his senior portraits. Whoopee! It all started one late winter afternoon. The unsuspecting Daniel and I drove out to South Mountain for a fun-filled afternoon of hiking and making fun of chubby, whiny children who didn’t want to hike. Daniel got out of the car and I shot him. The end.

All joking aside, this shoot was super awesome! Daniel is one of my most favoritest persons EVER and I love him dearly. He’s got a strange sense of humor and gives “excellent” relationship advice. ;)

Have a good day!

thanks for being awesome.

Take a look at dem apples! WordPress sent me this little report telling me all the EXCITING things that have happened to my blog. I dunno what to say! Thanks for checking my blog. Thanks for reading my words. Thanks for looking at my photos. Thanks for putting up with my tacky grammar and horrid spelling. Thanks for still checking out my blog even though I don’t post as much. Thanks for the lovely comments. And lastly, thank you for being awesome. You guys made this blog AWESOME. And because I love it so much, I’m gonna continue to post here. Instead of using my other website. Yeah, I love you guys.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 7,200 times in 2011. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 6 trips to carry that many people.

Who’da Thunk?

Greetings fellow blog readers! How have y’all been? So a lot has happened to me in the past month and I would love to tell you about it but something has been “revealed” to me as a photographer. Let me explain.

This “revelation” came to me yesterday afternoon while watching this DigitelRevTV video. Something that stuck out at me in the video was the way Chase Jarvis asked the client what they would like to see in their images. Right there, it hit me. I realized something I had never thought. The client has a vision for their photographs too! What I mean by that is the person I’m shooting probably has an idea what they want their photos to look like. Whenever I go out on a shoot, I always spent hours thinking what I want my photos to look like. It may be an actual image(s) or just a general theme.

Sometime this week I am going to be shooting my good friend Daniel, senior portraits (Daniel is a bit sick so when he gets to feelin’ better, I’ll shoot him ;) and the major “theme” I’m going to try to achieve in this shoot is to create “bright” images. Now that may seem awfully vague but it’s what I would like to see in the photographs. Brightness. Light. Airy. What do I mean by that? I dunno. But it’s my vision for the shoot.

Now if it weren’t for that video above, I don’t know if Daniel (and his family) would be completely satisfied with their photos. I’m sure Daniel has a “vision” for what he wants his photos to look like. And I need to know that! Or Daniel won’t be completely satisfied with his photos. So how do I find this out? I will ask him of course! What does he want to see in his photos? Is it brightness? Darkness? Happiness? Seriousness? Who knows! What matters most is that he gets what he wants.

I don’t know why it took me so long realize this. It’s something so completely important to personal photography! The funny thing about this is it made me think of my CollegePlus! coach. Every couple of weeks I have a Coaching Call to discuss how studying is going and so forth. One of the questions my coach ALWAYS asks me is, “Now my Matt, what do you want to take away from this call?” He asks it to me every time and every time, I don’t know what to say. I sometimes have a few questions, he answers them, and that’s all I need. When he asks that question, I always feel like I have to give some “serious” reply. When really it can be just getting a few simple questions answered, to helping me overcome some obstacle in my life. When I look at this, I realize this applies a lot to my photography! I should be asking my client what do they want to see in their images. Like I said above, they might have an idea and it is my job to help fulfill that idea!

Anyway, I’ll be back ~hopefully~ before the end of the year. But if not, I hope you all had a very merry christmas and a wonderful new year!

Pictures vs. Photographs

Well hey there, how you doin’?

So as of late I have been checking my Tumblr a lot and I don’t know why. Every time I check it, I get upset. What’s upsetting is how many horrible pictures my friends reblog. I swear, out of every “good” photo, there’s at least 10 bad ones. Do you people not have eyes?! You just reblogged a photo of someone’s shoes!!! I don’t care about shoes! Why the heck does this piece of crap picture have 2,000 likes/reblogs?! It’s horrible!!!

Then I realized not everyone shares the same view as me on the differences between a photograph and a picture. So here is what I think.

As a photographer I am always trying to improve my photography. One of the ways I am trying to is by taking less pictures and making more photographs. To me, picture and photograph mean two different things.

A picture is something that you take instantly. It’s usually a “slice-of-life” moment. Now these photos aren’t bad and sometimes they can be very interesting. But the problem is is EVERYONE takes pictures. And most the time this pictures have no thought put into them. They are just a snapshot. Usually un-compositional, grainy, blurry, easily forgettable, etc. But as a photographer one of the keys to becoming “One of the Greats” is to make PHOTOGRAPHS that are MEMORABLE.
To me, a photograph is something that took a photographer a long time to create. Minutes, hours, days, even years. Photography is suppose to be a form of art and art is RARELY created instantly. Some artists never finish their work. Another aspect to a good photograph is thought. Planning ahead. The photographer may have had an idea for a photograph in his head for a long time before he finally creates the image.
I’m trying to take less pictures and create less (yes thats right, less, you don’t make a lot of photographs) photographs. But those few photographs that I have created, I want to be great.

That’s my thought on the subject. What do you think? How would you describe a picture/photograph?

(P.S. sorry for any spelling, grammar, or missing words. I typed this all out on my iPhone.)

Oh, Hey There.

Soooo, yeah. It’s been a long time hasn’t it? I really don’t know what to blog about. As usually, school has been sucking up most of my time. I spent the past month studying for a history test that I ultimately failed (again). I was one point away from passing too, which made the failure so much more painful. So now I have to wait six months to retake it. UGH.

A couple of weeks ago my family went up to Sunrise, AZ to see all the “fantastic fall colors!” When we got there, most of the leaves had fallen off. And the trees that did have leaves, were just yellow. No reds, oranges, just yellow. :/ I had even spent a ton of money at Tempe Camera on film and a Circular Polarizing Filter just for the occasion! Now all I have is a roll of undeveloped film sitting in the Contax. But the CP Filter is cool! I totes gotta make a blog post on that one! One of the best photography investments I’ve made, next to my 50mm!

What next? Oh, Halloween! Ummm, we carved a pumpkin. And a few trick or treaters stopped by. I think people were importing kids into our neighborhood. haha We had a lot of candy left over though, which is always good. It’s why I like Halloween. We really don’t have to go trick or treating because we buy a big bag of candy and only give away like, six bars or packs or whatever. Here is the pumpkin my sister and I made. Guess which side I did?

OH, I guess the most exciting thing to happen to me is……………………………………………………You probably are just gonna skip over all these dots just to see what is so “exciting” to bad! More DOTS!!!! …………………………………………………………….I got an iPhone! YAY! Im all hip now! Well not now-now, but in a-few-weeks-now! Our whole family was eligible for new phones and they only had two none-data phones in the store and I didn’t want them because it was an update of the previous phone I had and that phone was a piece of junk so I def didn’t want that so I ordered an iPhone 4S! Im super excited! :D

In a few weeks, you'll be all mine little iPhone-y. All mine.

So this post really has no rhythm or structure or order. This is just everything that came to my mind while typing.

Have a good day!

The Death of a Lumix

Well ladies and gentlemen, I am sad to say, my Lumix has kicked the bucket. A few weeks ago I was using it to shoot some photos for my dad’s website. I was using it instead of my DSLR because it was easier to over-expose the background (because of the small sensor, small sensor = limited dynamic range) and keep everything in focus (also because of the small sensor). I kept turning the camera off and on because the battery was running low and I really didn’t want to have to charge it. I turned it off and set up the next product to photograph. I picked up my camera, flicked on the on switch…and it broke. That’s right. The on switch broke.

See, the switch is in the "on" position. The green light isn't on. The lens didn't extend out. Dead. Broken.

I’m actually a little upset. Personally, if it were anything else, I wouldn’t be mad. But this is the on switch! If it would have been the lens breaking, sensor failing, zoom motors burning out, anything, I wouldn’t be mad. Why? Well because that would show at least I was using the camera a lot. But the on switch is just such a small thing. Huh. I think I know what broke. my guess is, the little bit that sticks out underneath the switch, broke off. Because when I move the switch back and forth, it just “slides” instead of “clicks” like it used too. I dunno know. I’m not a camera repairman.
I looked up to see how much it would cost to replace/repair it. Since it’s no longer under warranty, I can’t get it fixed for free. But I can get a new replacement for 200 dollars! It’s the same model or the current one similar to it. I probably wont though. I would rather save that money for a new 35mm f2! Yes, I am currently lens shopping. Dunno if I will get one yet, but Im considering it.

One thing about new lenses, is they cost money. And money is one thing I am trying to make off photography. So, I would like to say, I have successfully created a new website just for hiring me as YOUR photographer! Which means, that it is the end of this blog. Yes, I know. It’s sad news to hear, but it’s time I get more serious about photography. This blog has served it’s purpose. Which was to provide a place for me to put my work. But now I realize I want to be more serious about photography and I feel as though this blog is not the right place.
So, I am moving over to my new website/blog.

matthigbyphotography.wordpress.com

What I plan on doing is posting more “professional” stuff. I will continue to post here until the end of the year. And then, I will probably just stop posting here. MAYBE. I dunno yet. So yeah. Check out my new website! :D

It’s Been a Month

Ummm…hi.
So as you can tell it has been almost a month since I last blogged. A month. For some reason it doesn’t feel as if it’s already been a month, yet at the same time, it feels longer. I don’t know where to start. A lot can (and has) happen in month. I started college. I never really stopped, more or less I just took a break. I’ve hung out with my friends a lot. Which has been dandy. Photography-wise, I haven’t done much lately. I still take a camera with me everywhere, but now it’s just for fun. Not serious stuff. Or photographic stuff. Not that any of my friends aren’t photographic (you’re all beautiful xD), but the photos are more personal. Im going to start doing a little more ‘self-promotion” most likely by creating a Facebook Fan Page and switching this URL over to matthigby.wordpress.com. So yeah. What have you guys been up to lately? Leave me a comment.

And since this a photography blog, here is a photo from Colorado.
