Pictures vs. Photographs

Well hey there, how you doin’?

So as of late I have been checking my Tumblr a lot and I don’t know why. Every time I check it, I get upset. What’s upsetting is how many horrible pictures my friends reblog. I swear, out of every “good” photo, there’s at least 10 bad ones. Do you people not have eyes?! You just reblogged a photo of someone’s shoes!!! I don’t care about shoes! Why the heck does this piece of crap picture have 2,000 likes/reblogs?! It’s horrible!!!

Then I realized not everyone shares the same view as me on the differences between a photograph and a picture. So here is what I think.

As a photographer I am always trying to improve my photography. One of the ways I am trying to is by taking less pictures and making more photographs. To me, picture and photograph mean two different things.

A picture is something that you take instantly. It’s usually a “slice-of-life” moment. Now these photos aren’t bad and sometimes they can be very interesting. But the problem is is EVERYONE takes pictures. And most the time this pictures have no thought put into them. They are just a snapshot. Usually un-compositional, grainy, blurry, easily forgettable, etc. But as a photographer one of the keys to becoming “One of the Greats” is to make PHOTOGRAPHS that are MEMORABLE.
To me, a photograph is something that took a photographer a long time to create. Minutes, hours, days, even years. Photography is suppose to be a form of art and art is RARELY created instantly. Some artists never finish their work. Another aspect to a good photograph is thought. Planning ahead. The photographer may have had an idea for a photograph in his head for a long time before he finally creates the image.
I’m trying to take less pictures and create less (yes thats right, less, you don’t make a lot of photographs) photographs. But those few photographs that I have created, I want to be great.

That’s my thought on the subject. What do you think? How would you describe a picture/photograph?

Icicles…In Phoenix, Arizona!?! What The…

Well today started off rather odd. Today I was going over to Vonda’s house to film another tutorial video to make “puffy inflated paper” (well, that’s what I call it. I don’t remember the name.) While we were on the way over, my mom and I drove past these two huge trees, covered with ICICLES!!! Like, both my mom and I couldn’t believe our eyes. I told my mom to turn around because I had to get photos. So she whipped the car around, dropped me off, and let me photograph for a about 15 minutes or so.

One of the guys there told me that he and his wife had been there for a little while, and in that time being he said over 100 people had stopped to talk photos. I noticed that quite a few people driving by were applying their breaks to gaze upon this glorious spectacle.

Of course, being a native Arizonan, I had no idea that when ice is frozen on sidewalks…that it becomes SUPER slippery. So my camera and I took a rather nasty fall. But of course being a photographer, I sacrificed myself to save my camera’s from being totally obliterated. But in return I got a nasty bruise on my right leg and have limped around all day. It was totally worth it.

So yes, we were a few minutes late for the recording of Vonda’s video, but once we told them our reason for being late, and showed a few photos, everyone understood.

Now on a completely different note, I had another Tea Party on Twitter. This one was different though…because Megan and I had it at midnight, her time. Megan lives in England so there is a considerable time difference between Arizona and England.

Meet the Congers – Hollie and Jordan’s Spectacular Wedding

Drum roll please…(rolls drum across floor)…Ladies and gentleman, I have here, for you, a few of the wedding photographs from Hollie and Jordan’s wedding! Hurray! Because of school, I’ve had to put off sorting them, but now that it is the weekend, I found time! Yippee! I have been dying to show you some of the photos because I got quite a few good ones.

A little about Hollie and Jordan before I get to the pictures (but mainly Hollie).

Our family has known the Cardot’s (Hollie’s fam) for years…almost forever! When we heard she was getting married, well it was a little shocking. I realized that the person who was getting married was also the same person who we traveled with for all those years. The person getting married was the same person who we hung out with, traveled with, ate countless dinners with, talked, joked around, and the list could go on and on. I was a little taken aback when I heard the news. I was shocked and happy all at the same time. It dawned on me how time really truly does fly and it quite literally seems like yesterday I was 12. Now I’m 18. Its pretty crazy my friends.

Now enough chit-chat. Lets look at dem wedding pictures! :D

Ball caps. They wore these as they "left the building" (picture me saying that with a terrible Elvis voice)

Candles and rose peddles. :)

Wedding Cake. :) YumYum!

Dad and the Bride walking down the isle. :)

Preacher a'preachin'!

Dads prayin' over Hollie and Jordan's Wedding.

Kiss Kiss! (psst! That means they are now married!)

Hurray! They are married! :D

Signing of the vows

Michael Jackson may be dead, but these two guys...are his kids. (not really)

Mini-Michael Jackson ;D

See! Now they are wearing the caps! Cool!

As they walked to their car, all the guest held up sparklers to light up the way. It was awesome!

And that ladies and germs, are just a few photographs from Jordan and Hollie’s wedding. :) I suggest that you all please visit Kimberly Kay Photography after looking through these. She and her husband were the official photographers and their photos are incredible!

Matt’s (almost) Famous Coconut Cream Pie

So, I’m kind of a, bit of a cook, mainly a baker. What? I like it! Its fun and mostly everything in baked goods requires sugar and butter. Which are the foundations to all human existence.

Now, I don’t mean to brag or nothin’ (well actually I do but I’m trying to be nice) but I fix a killer coconut cream pie. It has to be one of the bests. No joke. I’ve tried many other coconut cream pies and none compare to mine. Its the best. Sorry Marie. (Not.)

So here is the recipe:

  • 3 cups Half and Half
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup flaked coconut – toasted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 (9inch) pie shell, baked
  • 1 container of whipped cream

To get things rollin’, pour the half and half into a medium saucepan.

Now crack and beat up the eggs! Beat ’em up!

Next, you’ll want to get all ya sugahs and ya flours, put them in a bowl and mix ’em together! (Dont forget the salt!)

Mum gave me an interesting and helpful tip. Instead of pouring all the dry stuff into the big pot and then trying to beat the tar out of it to get it all mixed up, she suggested that you take a bit of the cream out of the pot and put it in with the bowl and beat the tar out of that! Then all your beating is done in a confined little space and comes out silky smooth. Genius!

Then ya pour it into the big pot and mix it all together.

Now turn on the stove to medium heat and stir constantly! If you don’t stir it constantly, itll all stick to the bottom and burn! I consider that bad juju for pies. Bad. Juju.

Now would be a good time to put the pie crust in the oven, that is if you are using a store-bought, still frozen, pie crust. If you actually took the time to make one from scratch, well that’s a lot scratching my friend. I’m lazy and used a store-bought one.

Now you’ll want to add the vanilla and toasted coconut. Half a cup to 3/4 of a cup will do, (for the coconut) depending on your taste.

Begin the pouring process!

Tah-dah! Done! Depending on how much you pie you like, you can fill it up half way or almost to the top!

There’s always left over pudding. Yum!

And there ya have it folks, my (almost) famous coconut cream pie! I swear, you wont be disappointed! Its rich, sweet, creamy, and extra super tasty! For best results, leave it in the fridge over night.

I hope, I know you’ll enjoy it!

just let the rain fall down

On This Day – to start things off, it has been raining mostly all day!! Which is so nice! I love the rain! Anyway, today was Moezart day, so obviously it was fun filled! But as usually school always ruins fun. Oh well. :(

Day 246 – I love the rain sooo much!!! If you lived in Arizona, rain is like…like more valuable then gold! haha Its the only time native Arizonians are united. To protect and serve the rain. haha

Its hard to get a good picture of the rain on a pool. haha Specially since I dont wanna get my camera wet!! Bad juju right!

So when editing I wanted to try and bring out the definition of the raindrops ripples.

Hmmm, I seem to be doing a lot of Black and Whites. Well they are my favorite and Im trying to make my black and whites better!

Well please spread the rain around and tell your friends about my blog!!! Please and thank you!!! :D

Oh The Humanity! Woes of a Photographer – Coveting New Gear

We photographers are ALWAYS envying for new gear. Leica comes outs with a new camera, we drool all over it. Canon unveils the 60D. I need one. NOW! Nikon…wait, Nikon is the devil. ;) But after reading something in the Nikon Learn and Explore App, I had a revelation!

So here are my thoughts, from one photographer to another. See, I have been looking into getting a DSLR. Why? Well isnt it obvious? They are a lot better the point n shoots, which is what I have. Well the other day I was reading something that I never really thought of in that way. I was reading in the “Nikon Learn and Explore” app and was reading about “The Little Camera That Can” by Sam Garcia. He said he is a professional photographer but he shoots with a lot of the Nikon COOLPIX cameras. He likes them because they are small, light, easy-to-use, and take decent pictures (even though Im a Canon/Lumix guy, this App is really handy and provides a lot of tips). Anyway, he said something that I couldnt help but agree with. He said, “I realize there are things the COOLPIX (and all other point and shoots) dont do…I liked when I quit worrying about what the little cameras couldnt do and started concentrating what they could do.” I couldnt help but agree! I realize that even though I have a point n shoot, I have one of the best! And I shouldnt focus on what it cant do, but what it CAN DO! I looked at my camera and realized that I have got a FANTASTIC camera! So thats what Im going to start focusing on. Instead of looking at what my camera fails to do, I should look at what it excels at, and amplify that! Use it in ways I never imagined! So I thought I would provide a helpful tip for yall. Even though it would be nice to start shooting with a DSLR, It’ll just have to wait. Well I hope I have enlightened you in some way!!

Thanks for checking out my blog! Please tell your friends! :)
